Frequently asked questions

Referrals, appointments, fees and what to expect when you see us.

Do I need a referral to see a paediatrician?

Yes. A current referral from your GP (or another specialist) is needed to claim a Medicare rebate for the consultation. A GP referral is generally valid for 12 months and a specialist referral for 3 months. Please bring the referral to your appointment.

What ages do you see?

We provide general and developmental paediatric care for children and young people from birth through adolescence.

What can a paediatrician help with?

Our paediatricians see children for general health as well as developmental and behavioural concerns - including autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, learning difficulties, continence, infant feeding and unsettled babies, sleep difficulties, and eczema and allergies.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment is a thorough, unhurried consultation. Your paediatrician will take a detailed history, talk through your concerns, examine your child where appropriate, and work with you to agree on next steps - which may include further assessment or referral to allied health.

What will it cost?

Thrive Paediatrics is a private, fee-for-service practice, and a Medicare rebate applies to consultations with a valid referral. For current fees and rebate information, please contact reception on 03 8574 1220.

How do you work with my GP and other providers?

We work collaboratively with your GP, school and allied health team so care stays coordinated over time. With your consent, we keep your referring GP informed after appointments.

How long is an appointment?

The first consultation is longer than a follow-up appointment, as your paediatrician takes a detailed history and gets to know your child. Reception can let you know the expected length when you book.

What is a developmental assessment?

A developmental assessment looks at how your child is growing and developing across areas such as learning, behaviour, communication and social skills. It usually involves a detailed history, observation and discussion, and may lead to further assessment or referral to allied health where helpful.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?

Some appointments may be suitable for telehealth depending on your child’s needs and Medicare requirements. Please ask reception whether a telehealth consultation is appropriate when you book.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Wait times vary depending on availability. Please contact reception on 03 8574 1220 for current appointment availability.

Can I bring my partner or a support person?

Yes. You are welcome to bring your partner, a family member or a support person to your child’s appointment.

What should I do in an emergency?

Thrive Paediatrics does not provide an after-hours or emergency service. In an emergency, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department. For urgent concerns outside a scheduled appointment, contact your GP.
